Photography workshop - «Photostory in a magazine»

On August 15 to 18 at the Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia a photography workshop was held on the topic of "Photostory in a magazine". This workshop consisted of various kinds of photographic tuition. An open lecture by Sergey Maximishin on the history and nowadays of photojournalism attracted more than 120 listeners (maximum lecture hall capacity). After the lecture a group of 20, chosen before the workshop by the quality of thier portfolios, received a photographic assignment from Sergey Maximishin. All members of the group were asked to shoot the photostory based on the novel "Moscow-Petushki" by Venedikt Erofeev.

Each member of the group took one train station from the list of the stops on the road from Moscow to Petushki station, depicted in Erofeev's novel. After shooting and preliminary choosing of their work, members showed their work to Sergey Maximishin. The last day of the workshop was spent in reviewing the work done by the group members and putting photographs together to make the complete photographic story "Moscow-Petushki". The members together with Sergey Maximishin had chosen the best photograph of the story. It was "Kurskiy train station, Moscow" by Sergey Trapezin.

In parallel with shooting on assignment and developing their own quality of work, all participants had the chance to show thier work to the group of photoeditors from the popular russian magazines. Members of the portfolio review didn't pass any preliminary quality reviews, on the contrary to the group shooting on assignment. Photoeditors in Chief held such kind of portfolio reviews regularly - that helps finding new talents among the growing photographic community. This time the photoeditors were very content by the style, quality and impact of the works shown by the most of the participants. Several people from the group soon received their assignments from the magazines.

Portfolio-review was held by: Anna Shpakova (Ogoniok Magazine, Photoeditor in Chief) together with french photographer Xavier Zimbardo and russian photographer Oleg Nikishin,
Irina Meglinskaya ("Afisha", Photoeditor in Chief),
Timofey Hvorostyanyi ("Geo", photoeditor),
Andrew Polikanov ("Russian reporter", Photoeditor in Chief, former "Time" photoeditor),
Natalya Udartseva (Prolab, Special projects and marketing director, former Photoeditor in Chief in "Company Secret" and "Ogoniok" magazines).

The main idea of the whole workshop was to show young photographers that you can shoot your own story and meet the public notice. Also it was important to show that great photographs are always needed in magazines and you can get your first assignment if you shoot remarkable pictures.

All members of the workshop printed their best photographs on Hewlett Packard DesignJet printers.

The workshop is organised by:
